Congratulations to Eleanor and her fellow Nanaimo Harpists who played August 6 in Nanaimo. She sent me these beautiful photos and I asked her to send me some words about the event so I got the details write : Here's what she said:
On August 6 , harpists from the Nanaimo area participated in a waterfront lantern ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the first use of the atomic bomb. The ensemble played a 15 minute prelude, a feature piece (Siciliana) and background music as the lanterns were launched into the lagoon. Mayor Leonard Krog proclaimed August 6 to be Hiroshima Day in Nanaimo. The program also included short speeches by a representative for the Japanese Canadian Society as well as the local MLA and MP. There was a beautiful musical selection played on the Shakuhachi flute. The annual event is sponsored by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
Bravo - that should be why we do this work - to help bring a little peace into our world.
